Newbie advice? Empty Newbie advice?

Post by SadChair Mon May 08, 2017 9:43 pm

Hey there! I'm interested in starting to dress mori kei, but there's a couple of issues I have. I've searched around quite a bit but it's been pretty fruitless so far. First off, I'm still in highschool and my job involves dealing with animals (I'm a vet assistant so I have to deal with claws and hair a lot). I'd rather have functional clothes that I can take layers off of when I have to work, but if that's not realistic let me know lol.
The second, and arguably the most difficult thing to work with, is that I'm a guy. There seems to be NO dudes in mori, and while I'm not afraid of dressing femininely dresses aren't my thing and that seems to be the only thing tumblr moris wear.
If someone could link me to some resources to help me start up with dressing mori, I'd be super super greatful! Thank you for taking the time to read this, and hopefully any replies can help others new to the fashion!

Newbie advice? Empty Re: Newbie advice?

Hello, and welcome to the forum! Thank you for the question, it's a great one and I know maaany morifolk (boys and girls alike) who struggle with similar problems. On the surface, mori kei doesn't seem very functional, but there are plenty of options! A subset fashion of mori kei, yama kei, is more oriented towards practicality, being made for hiking, but the mori fashion itself can be made functional.

The best thing to start with is inspiration. I'm sure you've done it, but simply googling 'mori boy' brings up some great examples. Here's a few select images to start with that meet your qualifications (functional, with removable layers):
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], offers these pinterest boards for mori boy/mori pants fashion: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.],[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

You need to decide yourself what you want your 'look' to be, but from these images a few ideas would be:

  • no matter what your base layer is, if it's linen/another natural material, it will already have a mori feel
  • boots, or sturdy sandals (maybe sandals not the best for working with animals, though)
  • loose vests, cardigans, and jackets over tighter shirts, or other outerwear that is easily removed but not movement restricting (so avoid ponchos/overly baggy sweaters)
  • the right scarf, hat, or bag easily makes an outfit mori, and are all things that are easy if not expected to be removed during work or school

As for where to buy clothes, most morifolk go to local thrift stores. If that isn't an option, some cheap-ish mori boy styles can be found on [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. If you think you could fit into (loose, baggy) pants styled for women, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] offers cheap linen pants. Both these online stores are based in Asia and so run small, so please double check the size with your sizes before buying anything.

You can also look on Amazon for linen clothing, searching "linen ____" will bring up good pants, shirts, vests, whatever necessary. However, in my opinion, it is best to purchase base layers in person at a physical store (the pants and shirt that will be worn close to your body and thus need to fit properly... outer layers can end up bigger and still look/feel okay, but bottom layers don't allow such freedom with sizing.) Even at chain/big clothing stores like Macy's or Target, you can sometimes find mori clothing. Just remember to look for linen / cotton / hemp / wool. Avoid clothes with too much rayon / polyester / nylon. These days it's hard to find clothing that doesn't have some percentage of those materials, but if it's 50% or more of a natural material it should be okay. You can judge yourself if it looks natural / mori if you are looking in person.

Don't jump to buy all your mori clothing at once, or even to make a full outfit in one shopping trip. I made that mistake when I first started dressing mori. It's better to take your time, be absolutely sure that every piece fits your body and desired style, and matches the other mori pieces you've acquired or, if you have none, your ideal mori style.

I suggest starting by finding your absolute favorite mori kei pants (one color, ideally a natural color like a shade of brown or green, with no pattern or a very simple pattern). Then use those pants to build up a single outfit: a matching shirt and shoes, then a light outer layer (vest or cardigan) and a bag, then a heavier outer layer (jacket or sweater) and a scarf. Again, take your time building your first outfit and make sure you appreciate each piece on its own. It's perfectly okay if it takes weeks or even months to build your first outfit. It will save you money and strife in the end. Once you have one outfit with multiple pieces that all go together, it's easy to gather more clothing based on those pieces. Soon enough you'll have multiple outfits that can be made from only a few articles of clothing.

I hope this helped! Sorry it was kind of long! I wish you the best of luck in your mori kei search. If you need more help, or have specific questions I didn't address, please post again! I will be happy to help~

Merry Mori-ing!

this is great advice... I'm horrible at mori coords they never look quite right or the pieces don't look as good together as they did in my head. could you make an actual indepth tutorial in the tutorial board for creating outfits or your first outfit... or how to layer properly or something? if you have time of course... I think it'd be helpful for others than just me.

Oh, sure! I didn't consider that. I can try to put together a comprehensive tutorial. Kathryn, the girl whose blog I linked above, already has some fantastic tutorials. Here are a few that might help you:

If I think I can offer advice that doesn't just replicate those tutorials, I will look into making one for this forum. Maybe I'll post those in the tutorial forum, too, they helped me a lot when I first started.

This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks!! I'll probably try finding some brown harem pants, as those seem to pop up frequently in mori. I'll definitely keep everything you mentioned in mind when I go out shopping!
